Having a proper hydration strategy during sport or physical activity is important to maintain both overall health and performance. A fluid deficit of just 2% of an individual’s body mass has been shown to affect athletic performance, cognition, mood and immune function.
During training camp in the NFL for example, it's not uncommon to see offensive linemen lose 5, 6, 7+ pounds due to fluid losses. If these athletes do not replace their fluid losses after practice, they will begin their next practice in a fluid deficit, which can affect their performance on the field.
