What is UV-C light?

UV is short for “ultraviolet” light. It refers to light beyond the range of human vision, at the short end of the spectrum. UV-C is short wave germicidal radiation, ≤ 290 nm and has no role in photobiology of natural sunlight. UV-C is very intense at a short distance which is why it is an extremely effective anti-microbial technology, but also why proximity of water to the light is critical to effective treatment.

How does UV-C light work?

UV-C (Ultraviolet C) light destroys microbe DNA of all sizes including: bacteria, Protozoan Cyst (Cryptosporidium), and water-borne viruses. Destroying the microbe DNA prevents reproduction. Without the capability of reproducing, the microbes are neutralized and rendered harmless.

Is UV light dangerous?

Used as directed, All Clear will not cause UV exposure to the user, so it is completely safe to use. UV-C will not pass through most materials including Tritan. As a result, when the All Clear cap is in operation while on the bottle, the UV-C light is extremely well contained. Note: We do recommend that you do not power up the All Clear cap when not on the bottle, which is why we programmed the unit to require a forceful and intentional 2 second press of the on/off button to power it up. If the All Clear cap is powered on when not on the bottle, avoid exposure to eyes and skin.

What type of UV bulb does the All Clear use? How is it different from SteriPen©?

The All Clear uses a U.S. manufactured, custom designed CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp). The primary advantages of a CCFL are that they are powerful lamps in terms of output which is critical to effectiveness while also offering consistent energy output over time, and being energy efficient.  Our primary competitor also offers a CCFL, the difference between ours and theirs is our custom shape which is designed to optimize transmission in our bottle.

If UV-C is beyond the range of human vision than how come you can see it?

The All Clear bulb emits a number of wavelengths of light, some of which are in the visible range. The visible light that the All Clear gives off is just that, visible light – not UV.  The visible light has no germicidal effect, but it is an important indicator that the lamp is functioning properly. If no light is visible then, the lamp is malfunctioning.
