CamelBak® Sponsored Runner Xavier Thévenard becomes first runner to achieve 1st place in all UTMB races

Thévenard dominates OCC in CamelBak Ultra Pro Run Vest at 2016 UTMB

Chamonix, France. (September 8, 2016) – No stranger to the heat and grueling trails of the Ultra Trail de Mont-Blanc (UTMB®), CamelBak sponsored Xavier Thévenard (Team ASICS Trail) entered this year’s race with his sights set on the only race he had yet to win, the Orsières-Champex-Chamonix (OCC). On Thursday, August 25, Thévenard achieved this, as he crossed the OCC finish line in first place with a time of 05:28:37, 15 minutes ahead of the second place finisher. This latest win makes Thévenard the first runner in race history to achieve a quadruple crown, taking first place in all four of the UTMB races with his first attempt.

Facing the challenge of France’s summertime heat, Thévenard selected the CamelBak Ultra™ Pro Run vest for on-course hydration. New for 2017, the lightweight Ultra Pro Vest allowed Thévenard to stay hydrated with 1L of water on board the vest, housed in two .5L CamelBak Quick Stow™ Flasks, as well as 3.5L of cargo to carry all of the gear he needed to complete the race. 3D vent mesh lines the vest to ensure airflow and breathability in warm temperatures.

“A few weeks before the race, I received the UItra Pro Vest and now I never take it off! I began to wear it for training and decided to use it for the first time in a race for the OCC,” explained Thévenard. “According to the rules of the OCC, runners must be self-sufficient so the ease of filling the soft flasks was critical to my success. I am very happy with my choice especially because it was so lightweight and comfortable, I basically forgot about it during the race—that’s a good sign!”

CamelBak sponsored runner Sebastien Camus competed in the event’s namesake race, the UTMB. Camus completed the 170km race in 23:12:43, placing 7th in the men’s field. Like Thévenard, Camus also selected the Ultra Pro Vest as his on-course hydration pack. “The illustrious Mont-Blanc is like no other race I’ve ever competed in,” said Camus. “The competition always very intense, but especially so this year with rankings evolving at every checkpoint. We didn’t have time to recover, just had time to refill our CamelBak Quick Stow Flasks and eat something quickly. I chose to use the Quick Stow Flasks to lighten my pack, have easy access to my hydration and ensure comfort, especially in the intense heat.”

“The UTMB races are truly inspiring feats,” said CamelBak International Marketing Manager Kim Rogers. “If completing these epic length distances isn’t enough, the added challenge of summer heat and 10,000m elevation, make the efforts by our CamelBak athletes—and all the runners&mdasha testament to the mental toughness and training that goes into preparing for such a race. We are proud to continue to be one piece of the puzzle that fuels athletes through this renowned race.”

CamelBak also provided the hydration vests for sponsored runners Rory Bosio and Moritz auf der Heide who also competed in the CamelBak Ultra Pro Vest. For more information on CamelBak athletes and run hydration products, please visit
